In the USA preventive healthcare practices provide long term health benefits. In Haiti healthcare workers see people suffer and die because of basic equipment failure. Haitian doctors report that sterilizers, blood pressure cuffs, Xray machines and respirators sit broken and useless in scores of hospitals. No one knows how to repair them.
Caring Friends is a partner with Rotary Clubs in Houston and Haiti in starting and supporting a medical equipment repair training school.
GOALS:
- Provide medical equipment repair training for Haitian ‘techs.’
- Target preventive healthcare efforts in Houston
Houston: Preventive Healthcare and Hispanics
Bilingual Hispanic women are trained to work with indigenous populations regarding healthcare education, access to healthcare in local communities, and the necessity of exercise and diet for good health. In Houston Caring Friends is an adjunct partner with Pro Salud, Inc.
Haiti: Broken Medical Equipment Crisis
Thousands of pieces of critical medical equipment go unrepaired due to no repair training school ever in Haiti. Caring Friends partnered with Houston and Haiti Rotarians to start a medical equipment training school in Haiti. In 2013, forty-five Haitian techs are in training from 23 public and private hospitals serving hundreds of thousands of Haitian residents.
Designated contributions provide room-board-tuition scholarship for a Haitian medical technician’s training in diagnosing and repairing critically important things laboratory equipment, blood pressure cuffs, blood suction machines, EKGs, etc.
Sustainability: preventive healthcare initiatives and vocational training initiatives for medical equipment repair provide long term medical benefits to both resident populations and healthcare professionals.
